Westerbeke 4.2 KW (EFI) (4.2MCGB)

1500 RPM 3 Cylinder, Naturally Aspirated, Mutil Port Fuel Injection Engine Generator 4.2KW (18.2 amps). Built to last. Quiet petrol unit - no sound enclosure required. Optional Venclosure available - for aesthetics, may reduce sound but not designed to do so. Low-CO, Low-Profile, Low-Speed The 4.2 MCGB exemplifies one of the most compact low-CO, low-speed gasoline generators on the market. Westerbeke's unique marine design allows for a high performance generator that is comparable in size to high speed competitors. The lower operating speed of the 4.2 MCGB combined with a heavy-duty industrial base engine contribute to a longer-lasting more reliable product. Multiport EFI and Returnless Fuel System The 4.2 MCGB features sequential multiport electronic fuel injection (MPI). MPI provides optimum fuel efficiency, easy starting, improved reliability and reduced emissions. In conjunction with MPI, electronic speed control maintains the engine at a constant speed (precise frequency regulation) and virtually eliminates "bogging down" when load is applied. A water-cooled returnless fuel system aids in the prevention of vapor lock for improved performance in high ambient temperatures. MPI also features advanced diagnostic capabilities. Smooth and Quiet Operation Featuring a 3-cylinder industrial engine operating at an electronically controlled 1500 rpm, the 4.2 MCGB is extremely smooth and quiet running. In comparison, 3000 rpm engines are generally noisier than their 1500 rpm counterparts and require sound shields to attain similar sound levels.

What is a marine generator?

A marine generator is a generator specifically designed to produce electricity aboard boats and yachts, such as Fontaine Pajot and Leopard catamarans, as well as monohull sailing yachts and motor yachts. It typically uses a diesel engine to drive an electrical alternator, supplying power to air-conditioning, refrigeration, lighting, watermakers, cooking equipment, battery chargers and other onboard systems.

How is a marine generator different?

  • Corrosion resistance: Marine generators are designed to withstand saltwater, humidity and corrosive marine environments, using appropriate materials, coatings and protective components.
  • Cooling system: Many marine generators use a seawater heat exchanger to remove engine heat, rather than relying solely on a conventional land-based radiator and airflow.
  • Compact installation: They are engineered to fit within confined engine rooms or dedicated compartments, with consideration for ventilation, exhaust routing and maintenance access.
  • Noise and vibration: Yacht generators often incorporate sound-insulated enclosures, vibration-isolating mounts and exhaust silencing to minimise noise transmitted into cabins and living spaces.
  • Marine safety: Their design must account for fuel systems, electrical protection, exhaust gases, fire risks and the possibility of water ingress. Applicable marine standards and certification depend on the vessel and market.
  • Continuous operation: Marine generators are selected for reliable operation under sustained electrical loads and changing vessel conditions, including heat, humidity, vibration and vessel movement.

How does it compare with other generators?

A land-based generator is generally designed for stationary operation, with cooling, enclosure and environmental protection suited to its installation.

A portable generator prioritises portability, affordability and temporary power, often using an air-cooled engine and an open or lightly enclosed frame.

A marine generator prioritises safe, reliable power in a confined, moving, saltwater environment, with particular emphasis on corrosion protection, cooling, noise control and integration with the vessel's electrical system.

How to choose marine generator size

For premium cruising catamarans and monohull sailing yachts such as Fountaine Pajot and Leopard Catamarans,  focus is on marine generator manufacturers with a strong reputation for reliability, low noise and vibration, compact installation, and Australia marine generator servicing.

The best choice depends on whether you're equipping a production cruising catamaran, a luxury monohull, or a high-end yacht with substantial air-conditioning, watermaker, induction cooking and battery-charging loads. To discuss boat electrical load requirements schedule a call back today to discuss your engineering requirements with AHI Marine.

What matters when choosing a generator for a catamaran?

Catamarans have a few particular considerations compared with monohulls:Unordered list

  • Noise transmission: Generator vibration can travel through a hull and bulkheads into cabins. Sound insulation and proper isolation mounts are important.
  • Installation space: Generator access, ventilation, cooling-water routing and servicing clearance can be just as important as the generator's physical dimensions.
  • Electrical demand: Air-conditioning, watermakers, induction cooktops, refrigeration and battery charging can drive the required output considerably higher.
  • Battery integration: A suitably designed inverter and lithium-battery system may allow you to run quieter loads from batteries instead of operating the generator continuously.
  • Local marine generator servicing: For a yacht operating in Australia or the South Pacific, nearby technicians and spare-parts availability should carry significant weight.
